CO-SPONSORSHIP: Chinese Christianities Unit and World Christianity Unit
We invite reflection on the future(s) of “Chinese Christianities as World Christianity,” focusing on how Chinese Churches around the world adapt, change, and express their faith in different parts of the world, negotiating their cultural identities and their conception of the global Church in conversation with local life.
On the one hand, this can mean attention to the migrations of Chinese Christians around the world to any place where the Chinese find themselves, from China to Malaysia, from Brazil to Canada, Indonesia to Spain, and across the African continent.
On the other hand, the diasporic movements of Chinese people hardly exhausts either what might count as "Chinese Christianity" (transmitted and lived also through material culture, narrative, and memory) or the frame "World Christianity" (as a generative lens for understanding intercultural relations).
Thus, we invite proposals that interrogate and explicate "Chinese Christianities as World Christianity" to helpfully parse the relationship between cultural specificity and religious identity/difference.
