Call for Proposals
JFSR invites proposals in connection with our upcoming special issue, “Feminist research, reflections, critiques, and activist interventions on religion, Palestine, and Israel.”
We invite feminist scholars, teachers, and activists engaged with Palestine and Israel into a crucial forum about feminism and religion in a time of genocide, nationalism, and authoritarianism. We acknowledge that in its more than 40 year history, the JFSR has not been known for its engagement with this region.
Possible topics include but are not restricted to the following:
- Research on marginalized populations in Israel/Palestine particularly women, children, queer, and trans people
- Feminism in Israel and Palestine (i.e. Where is feminism in Palestine/Israel? How is feminism experienced for people with different investments in Israel/Palestine?)
- The aspirations and limitations of transnational feminisms and decolonial solidarities
- Experiences related to mothers, mothering, and reproductive justice in Palestine/Israel
- Risks and challenges for feminists in activist spaces (eg. identifying as anti-Zionist in Jewish spaces; Muslim feminists who discuss the challenges of being religious in liberal spaces that eschew religion)
- Local and global contexts for understanding Israel/Palestine (eg, issues ignored or overlooked in Israel/Palestine as a result of the world’s attention on Palestine/Israel; diaspora communities and transnational networks of solidarity and fissure)
- Israel/Palestine and the university (eg. What has activism been like on campus? How has it affected teaching or solidarity work?)
- Political mobilizations of Anti-Palestinian racism and Anti-Semitism
- Christian Zionism and histories of colonial violence and racism
- Debates around language, names, phrases, and terms and the limits of language (i.e. genocide, political slogans, feminism, Israel/Palestine or Palestine/Israel)
- The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion’s history of engagement with Palestinian and Muslim feminists; Jewish and Israeli feminisms; Israel/Palestine
Review Process: Participant names are anonymous to chairs and steering committee members until after final acceptance/rejection
