The Puritan Universalism of Jeremiah White

Abstract for Online Program Book (maximum 150 words)

It is widely believed that the English Puritans of the seventeenth century universally embraced a traditional doctrine of eternal conscious torment. However, the reality is more complex. Two of Oliver Cromwell’s chaplains embraced a doctrine of universal restoration according to which all people are saved. This paper explores the Puritan universalism of one of them, Jeremiah White (1629–1707).
