Title: Practical Theology in Politically Fraught Times: A Transformational Response to Christian Nationalism and White Nationalism
Abstract The contemporary political landscape, marked by increasing ideological polarization, Christian Nationalism, and the erosion of democratic institutions, necessitates a robust engagement from practical theology. This paper explores how practical theology can offer prophetic critiques of unjust political systems through the lens of Transformational Leadership. Using the Four I’s of Transformational Leadership—Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individualized Consideration—this study examines the work of ecclesial leaders such as Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde and Human Rights activist Bishop William Barber as prophetic voices against the rise of Christian Nationalism and White Nationalism in America.
Introduction Practical theology, committed to bridging theological reflection and lived reality, is uniquely positioned to address the intersection of faith and politics. The increasing prominence of Christian Nationalism and White Nationalism in American political and religious spheres presents a critical challenge to democratic values and social justice (Warnock, 2022). Through the framework of Transformational Leadership, this study highlights how prophetic voices within ecclesial leadership confront these challenges, offering a path toward meaningful engagement and social transformation (Burns, 2019).
Idealized Influence: The Moral Authority of Prophetic Leaders Bishop Mariann Budde exemplifies Idealized Influence through her moral leadership and public theological stance against Christian Nationalism. Her advocacy for inclusive democracy and critique of political leaders who manipulate religious narratives underscore her role as a guiding figure (Budde, 2021). Similarly, Bishop William Barber’s leadership in the Poor People’s Campaign embodies a moral commitment to justice that galvanizes faith communities against systemic oppression (Barber & Wilson-Hartgrove, 2020).
Inspirational Motivation: Mobilizing Communities for Justice Transformational leaders inspire collective action by articulating a compelling vision for justice. Bishop Barber’s speeches and activism ignite moral imagination, challenging congregations and civic communities to confront systemic injustices (West, 2021). Bishop Budde’s calls for theological integrity within Christian institutions encourage clergy and laity alike to reject nationalist ideologies and embrace a faith committed to pluralism and equity (Budde, 2021).
Intellectual Stimulation: Challenging Misinformation and Disinformation The proliferation of misinformation and disinformation fuels ideological extremism. Practical theologians must engage in intellectual stimulation by providing critical frameworks that dismantle false narratives. Bishop Budde’s theological critiques of Christian Nationalist rhetoric emphasize the importance of historical accuracy and scriptural integrity (Budde, 2021). Likewise, Bishop Barber employs historical and theological analysis to expose how White Nationalism distorts Christian ethics to justify racial and economic injustices (Barber & Wilson-Hartgrove, 2020).
Individualized Consideration: Pastoral Care and Social Advocacy Transformational leaders attend to the needs of individuals while advancing systemic change. Bishop Barber’s work demonstrates deep pastoral concern for marginalized communities, intertwining pastoral care with social advocacy (Warnock, 2022). Bishop Budde’s ministry emphasizes listening to diverse voices within her diocese, fostering theological reflection that empowers individuals and congregations to engage in justice work (Budde, 2021).
Conclusion Practical theology, informed by Transformational Leadership, provides a necessary framework for confronting Christian Nationalism and White Nationalism. By analyzing the prophetic leadership of Bishop Mariann Budde and Bishop William Barber through the Four I’s of Transformational Leadership, this study highlights how practical theologians can inspire moral courage, intellectual rigor, and compassionate engagement in politically fraught times.
