"A Transcending Portrait of the Prophet Muhammad"
By Salih Sayilgan (Georgetown University)
Perhaps no major religious figure in any tradition has been as misunderstood in the West as the Prophet of Islam. Part of the problem is that many of his biographies tend either to be apologetic, seeking to address polemical criticisms, or they focus primarily on the historical context in which he lived.
In this lecture, drawing on his newly published book, Following the Prophet: The Life and Legacy of Muhammad, Sayilgan will argue that viewing Muhammad solely through the lens of his historical context fails to capture his significance in Islam and his role in the spiritual lives of nearly one-quarter of the world’s population.
The first 30 people will receive a free copy of Dr. Sayilgan's book and he will sign copies afterwards.
The event will be moderated by Dr. Fatima Siwaju (University of Virginia).
