Papers Session In-person November Annual Meeting 2026

AI, Formation, and the Future of Religious Education

Abstract for Online Program Book (maximum 150 words)

What is the future of Religious Education in times of AI and digital technology? How are emerging technologies reshaping spiritual formation, theological education, and religious learning? What wisdom might older theological traditions still offer amid rapid technological change? Who are entering seminaries today, and what kinds of social, economic, and vocational realities are transforming the field? At the same time, what might religious educators be overlooking in an age increasingly shaped by efficiency, optimization, and data?

This session brings together papers responding to these questions from diverse contexts of religious education. Presenters include a professor working with historically minoritized communities in spiritual formation, the Director of Student Data and Research at ATS, a hospital chaplain exploring trauma-informed pedagogy, and a graduate student engaging Gregory of Nyssa and AI-mediated education. Together, these papers invite participants to reflect critically and constructively on the possible futures of Religious Education.
