Queering Pedagogy at a Time of Crisis: A Roundtable

How do we teach LGBTIQ+ subjects effectively, honestly, and safely in today’s political climate? Amid ongoing attacks on the study of gender and sexuality in higher education, faculty at all manner of institutions—both public and private, in all regions of the United States—are facing new (and old) challenges as they teach about gender, sexuality, and religion. In this roundtable, professors employed in a range of educational institutions and a variety of sub-disciplines will share strategies that they have developed to promote optimal learning about material at the intersection of queer studies, trans studies, and religious studies. Panelists will discuss facilitating student conversations, choosing texts and assignments, determining how to respond (or not) to current events, and an educator’s responsibility to protect all in their classroom. Panelists will also share, if they are comfortable doing so, how they have navigated the challenges, precarity, and ongoing decision-making surrounding one’s visibility and self-expression as a queer and/or trans scholar.
